CHAMPCAR/CART: Zanardi Toronto Saturday qualifying notes

Alex Zanardi and the ...

Alex Zanardi and the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard turned in a fast qualifying lap of 58.945 seconds (an average of 107.185 mph) to take the outside-12th-row starting position for Sunday's Molson Indy Toronto at Exhibition Place. Zanardi's time was 11th-fastest in the first of two qualifying groups to tackle the 1.721-mile temporary road course today.

Teammate Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard qualified fourth with a fast lap of 57.923 seconds (109.076 mph). Kanaan's lap was the fastest among the first-group qualifiers, made up primarily of drivers from the lower half of the driver points standings entering the weekend. The top group time today earned Kanaan a spot in the "fast group" qualifying session for the next road course event at Mid-Ohio next month. Defending series champion Gil de Ferran grabbed the pole today with a fast qualifying lap of 57.703 seconds (109.492 mph) with his teammate, Helio Castroneves, grabbing the outside-front-row starting spot at 57.767 seconds (109.370 mph). Kenny Brack was third at 57.886 seconds (109.146 mph).

Race time Sunday is 1p.m. EDT with a live broadcast set for ABC-TV. Sunday morning's 30-minute warm-up session begins at 9 a.m. The CART2DAY warm-up show will be broadcast at 11 a.m. EDT Sunday.

ALEX ZANARDI

"Obviously it's been a struggle for us so far this weekend. This is certainly not where we want to be starting the race tomorrow. We'll just have to run a strategic race and stay out of trouble. There are always a lot of incidents here, so we just can't put ourselves in a position to get caught up in anything. One positive thing in the last two days is that we do have a very consistent car, especially with full tanks. My engineers worked some magic on Saturday night at Cleveland two weeks ago because we had a very good race car there. I'm hoping we can do the same thing here tonight."
