Zanardi Nominated For ESPY
Alex Zanardi, who won seven times in 19 races en route to claiming the 1998 FedEx Championship Series title, has been nominated for an ESPN "ESPY" Award as Auto Racing Performer of the Year. The Italian driver, who scored a series-high seven victories (Long Beach, St. Louis, Detroit, Portland, Cleveland, Toronto and Australia) en route to his second consecutive FedEx Championship Series crown, earned $2,229,250 in 1998, including the $1 million season-ending championship award from PPG Industries. Zanardi joins NASCAR's Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin as the nominees for the annual award. The annual ESPN Awards program is set for Monday, February 15 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. All proceeds from the event benefit the V Foundation, established at the first ESPYs by the late college basketball coach Jim Valvano and ESPN, to raise funds for cancer research.
