Alex Zanardi, in the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard, was eighth-fastest in practice this afternoon for Sunday's Miller Lite 200. Zanardi, a two-time winner here (1997-98), recorded a fast lap of 1 minute, 7.218 seconds (an average of 120.932 mph). He was 12th-fastest in this morning's opening session with a time of 1:08.648 (118.413 mph).
Teammate Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard finished the seventh fastest in the afternoon session in 1:07.098 (121.141 mph) on his final lap of the day. Kanaan was 11th in this morning's opening session in 1:08.554 (118.575 mph). Defending series champion Gil de Ferran was fastest this afternoon and overall today at 1:06.151 (122.882 mph) with his teammate, Helio Castroneves, right behind him in the second spot at 1:06.234 (122.729 mph). Jimmy Vasser was third at 1:06.788 (121.710 mph).
Practice resumes at 9:45 a.m. EDT Saturday with qualifying scheduled for 1:45 p.m. ESPN2's qualifying show will be shown on a tape-delayed basis at 1 a.m. EDT Sunday. Race time on Sunday is noon EDT with a live broadcast set for ESPN2.
"It feels so good to be on a track where you actually have a good amount of grip. It seems like that hasn't been the case at the tracks we've been to recently. This is definitely a place where you need a good car, and we seem to be headed in the right direction. Usually, our Fridays on road courses have had us crying the blues at the end of the day. But we're pumped because things are going well so far. Tomorrow, of course, is another day and we just have to keep moving in a positive direction."
