Previously at Portland: The 2001 Freightliner/G.I. Joe's 200 will mark Herta's eighth consecutive start at Portland International Raceway. Last year, Herta competed under the
Mo Nunn banner, while substitute driving for the injured Tony Kanaan. Herta started the race from 20th position and finished 16th in the #55 Mercedes powered Reynard.
Fond Memories: Portland International Raceway has been very successful for Herta, as one of his seven career pole positions came there in 1998. Herta has recorded four top-ten starts and two top-ten finishes at the raceway, including his third place finish in 1998.
Herta's Helmet: "I came up with this design when I transitioned from karts to cars. The pattern hasn't really changed too much through the years, but the colors have. My first helmet in this design was much wilder, it had flames and the colors were fluorescent red and mint green. When I was racing in the Formula Ford Festival, I was sitting with a friend of mine in a pub in England, and he came up with a more updated version, losing the flames and changing the colors. I ran that version for several years and then I met with Troy Lee last year and we did another color update. Troy used metallic paints, which look really good, especially in the sunlight. So this is the same basic helmet design since I started racing cars. I really like it, I think it is interesting and different."
Herta on Portland: "I have had some really good races at Portland, hopefully we can do that this year. At this point of the season, we really need to get some results and get ourselves back into the points. We have had some pretty bad weekends recently, and we need to put all of that behind us, and get some points on the board."
