The Milwaukee Mile
Sunday, June 3, 2001
The day started well for Herta and the Zakspeed/Forsythe Racing team, as they were the second fastest car in morning warm-up, just one tenth of a second behind Gil de Ferran. Herta and his engineers felt confident with their race strategy, with the goal of remaining on the lead lap and picking up as many positions as quickly as possible. Herta did not fail, as he avoided all debris on the first lap from the contact between Castroneves and da Matta and passed three cars in the process. The track went green again on lap 11 but was quickly back under a full course yellow as Paul Tracy made heavy contact. Herta took the restart on the 20th lap in 14th position and passed Roberto Moreno and Christian Fittipaldi in the process. Herta passed Oriol Servia and also registered his best lap time of the race on lap 24 with a time of 24.910. Running strong in 11th position, Herta continued to set competitive lap times but was plagued by a spark plug failure, which caused a coil to burn out, and forced Herta and the Zakspeed/Forsythe Racing crew to retire the car on the 73rd lap.

Herta on the day:
"I feel gutted. The car was really good, and we were already up to 11th. I think we could have walked away with a bunch of points today. This is a huge disappointment."
