World's Fastest Santa Hits The Streets In Indy
Indianapolis (December 17, 1998) - If you were in downtown Indianapolis during Wednesday's lunch hour and thought you saw Santa Claus tooling around Monument Circle, you can rest assured that you weren't going crazy from the Holidays.
Yes, it was Santa. Yes, a Champ Car driven by Mauricio Gugelmin was towing his sleigh. And, yes, those were reindeer affixed to the front wing of the Champ Car.
Santa, somewhat of a rookie in the racing world, commissioned Gugelmin to help him deliver the goods collected from CART CARES '98, a holiday food drive conducted by the Indianapolis-based family of CART teams and suppliers who compete in the FedEx Championship Series and the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights series.
The drive will benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. Gleaners, a Second Harvest agency, supports over 348 Central Indiana agencies that provide to those in need.
"Santa caused a bit of oversteer in the corners," said Gugelmin, who set the world closed course speed record for his 240.942 mph qualifying lap at California Speedway in 1997. "I think he's doing remarkably well. We're going to work on perfecting the street setup first, and then we'll see how the car handles on the roof tops."
Over 30 companies based in Indianapolis have contributed food or cash to the drive. Fans also participated by bringing food items to PacWest Racing Group's shop in Indianapolis. Since the program began, over 750 gallons of food have been collected in addition to cash.
The drive continues through December 22. Fans still have the opportunity to participate by dropping off food at PacWest's Indianapolis race shop. The shop address is posted at www.pacwestracing.com. Additional information is available by calling Brian Lawrence at PacWest Racing at (317) 297-2500.
