England's Dan Wheldon has been chosen to demonstrate a Champ Car at the brand new Rockingham Motor Speedway in England this weekend.

The 22-year old Englishman has flown home from his current base in Indianapolis to get behind the wheel of a Champ Car for demonstration laps at the new Northamptonshire circuit during the COYS Historic Festival meeting on Sunday and Monday 27th and 28th May.

Tomorrow, former IndyCar and Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell will drive the same Champ Car around the Rockingham circuit - the first banked 'oval' track to host racing in England since the famous Brooklands venue closed in 1939.

22-year old Wheldon successfully began racing in England in karts and junior single-seater formula! e before crossing the Atlantic at the beginning of 1999 to further his career. He made an immediate impression in North America, winning the USF2000 Championship in 1999 and finishing second in last year's CART Toyota Atlantic Championship. In both seasons Wheldon also won the coveted title of 'Rookie of the Year'. This season Wheldon has progressed to the CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship with PacWest Racing and has already had a best result of second at Long Beach last month.

By next season it is Wheldon's ambition to be racing in the CART FedEx Champ Car Series - but, if it's at all possible, he wants to be on the starting grid for the first Champ Car race at Rockingham, this September!
