Tora Has Fourth-Best Road/Street Course Finish Of The Season At Laguna
Monterey, Calif., Oct. 14, 2001 -- Walker Racing rookie driver Tora Takagi drove the #5 Pioneer/DENSO Special/Toyota/Reynard/Firestone car to a 13TH place finish on the 2.238-mile permanent road course at Laguna Seca Raceway today, his fourth-best finish this season on a road or street course.
Tora was on the grid for the Shell 300 in 10th, his second highest start on a road/street course in 2001 and was in 4th position when he came into the pits under the yellow for his second and final pit stop of the day.
"Due to a broken exhaust system, we had a failure of the air jack on our second pit stop," said owner Derrick Walker. "There was a small fire that burnt through several electrical cables and the air jack line. So as a result, we lost the air jack and several positions in the pits during our extended stop.
This was also an un-typical Laguna race in that you can usually count on 10% of the laps to be run under yellow conditions," added Walker. "That turned into 40% of the race run under yellow today which also affected our strategy for the race and our ability to finish in the top six." There were a total of eight caution periods for a total of 29 laps and the race distance was shortened from 83 laps to 76 due to time constraints. "The race was a very physical one and this track is very difficult to overtake on," Tora said. "But I managed to pass some cars during this very competitive race. It was very good that we got as high as fourth and we were headed for a top six finish before our long pit stop."
Living the Dream: The Walker Racing CART crew members have been wearing specially made T-shirts under their firesuits and team uniforms with the slogan LTD on them. LTD stands for "living the dream" and is also the battle cry of the team at their final pre-race meeting.
Round 20 of the CART FedEx Championship Series will be run at Surfer's Paradise in Queensland, Australia on Oct. 28. The Honda Indy 300 will be broadcast on ESPN at 1 p.m. (ET.)
