MONTEREY, Calif. - Team KOOL Green driver's Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti set the 8th and 18th fastest times during today's practice session for Sunday's Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca Raceway.

Both TKG drivers spent the day searching for a good balance on their cars, with Tracy clocking a fast lap of 115.419 mph (1:09.905 seconds) in the afternoon session. Franchitti turned his fastest lap in the morning session, when he recorded a quick lap of 114.645 mph (1:10.276 seconds).

Fastest on the day was Helio Castroneves, with a lap average of 117.040 mph (1:08.838 seconds) around the 2.238-mile road course. Gil de Ferran was second fastest at 116.184 mph (1:09.345).

Qualifying for Sunday's race is set for tomorrow beginning at 4:45 p.m. (EDT). It will be preceded by a final practice session from 1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. (EDT)

The 83-lap race starts at 4:00 p.m. (EDT) on Sunday, and will be televised live by ESPN.

TKG's engine supplier for the past five years, Honda Performance Development, announced today that they will no longer participate in the CART series after the 2002 season. (See driver comments below.)

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(8th with a lap-average speed of 115.419 mph / 1:09.905 seconds)

"The day ended pretty good. We were kind of out to lunch this morning because we were trying a real weird setup that was good somewhere else but didn't really work here today. We went back to what (teammates) Dario (Franchitti) and Michael (Andretti) ran this morning, which was okay and we improved on that. We've still got some work to do to get the KOOL car ready for qualifying and the race. Qualifying is very important here because there are so few opportunities for passing. It's going to be important to get a good result here and in the final races of the season in order to get a good place in the championship."

ON TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT BY HONDA: "It's disappointing news. Honda has been a great partner to work with over the last four years and they'll be missed by Team KOOL Green and CART.

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(18th with a lap-average speed of 114.645 mph / 1:10.276 seconds)

"We made some good gains between the morning and the afternoon sessions, but we really didn't get a chance to show what the KOOL car was capable of. I only got a couple of laps in at the end where I was comfortable with the car and on fresh tires. I got held up on one of the laps and I made a mistake on the other. The car is definitely faster than what we've shown today. We've got a bit more work to do if we want to catch up to the guys who were quicker."

ON TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT BY HONDA: "Honda is a great sponsor and partner for CART and Team KOOL Green. I'm disappointed to hear that we won't be able to continue the partnership beyond next season."
