Moreno Puts Toyota On Aussie Pole For Second Straight Year
MORENO CONTINUES HOT STREAK WITH FIRST POLE OF 2001 - Roberto Moreno (Visteon Toyota) continued his late-season qualifying success by earning his first pole of the season and the second of his career by qualifying more than three-tenths faster than second-quick Gil de Ferran at the Indy 300 in Surfers Paradise. Moreno has now qualified in the first two rows in consecutive events after a fourth last race at Laguna Seca. Moreno has excelled on street circuits this season with a victory at Vancouver, as well as a third at Detroit.
TWO IN A ROW FOR TOYOTA AT SURFERS - Roberto Moreno's pole marks the second consecutive year that a Toyota has won the pole at Surfers Paradise. Juan Montoya took top qualifying honors last year in a Toyota.
DA MATTA PUTS SECOND TOYOTA IN TOP THREE - Cristiano da Matta (Texaco/Havoline/Kmart Toyota) made it two Toyotas in the top three with a third in qualifying today. The third spot will mark da Matta's best starting position since he started in the same position at Milwaukee in June.
DIXON RETURNS DOWN UNDER WITH STRONG EIGHTH - Australian-born rookie Scott Dixon (Nextel/Powerware Toyota) earned his ninth top-10 qualifying effort in the last 13 races with an eighth today. The New Zealander can wrap up CART Rookie of the Year honors with a ninth tomorrow. Dixon was the Australian Formula Holden champion just three seasons ago at the age of 18.
AND JIMMY MAKES FOUR - Jimmy Vasser (Visteon Toyota) was the fastest qualifier in the first session today and that mark held up to make him the fourth Toyota-powered driver in the top-10 with a 10th overall. Vasser's performance gave Patrick Racing two cars in the top 10 for Sunday's race.
TOYOTA SHOOTS FOR FOURTH ROAD COURSE WIN - With four cars starting in the top 10 tomorrow, Toyota will be shooting for its fourth CART road course victory of the season. Roberto Moreno won through the streets of Vancouver, Bruno Junqueira won at Road America and Cristiano da Matta was triumphant at Monterrey.
