Tracy third in provisional qualifying in Toronto.
TORONTO, Ont. - Team KOOL Green driver Paul Tracy gave his hometown crowd something to cheer about by setting the third quickest time during Friday's provisional qualifying period for Sunday's Molson Indy race. Tracy, better known by Torontonians as the "Thrill from West Hill", posted a best lap of 58.953 seconds (107.170 mph) on the 1.755-mile temporary street course at Toronto's Exhibition Place. Tracy's teammate Dario Franchitti also cracked the top five by posting the fifth quickest time of the day. Franchitti marked a lap of 59.016 seconds (107.056 mph).
While Tracy earned his best lap on his second to last trip around the circuit, Cristiano da Matta set the fastest lap of the day midway through the session. Da Matta recorded a 58.487 seconds (108.024 mph), earned a championship point for the effort and guaranteed himself a front row starting position for Sunday's race. Bruno Junqueira was second quickest with a time of 58.724 seconds (107.588 mph).
Tomorrow's CART FedEx Champ Car schedule starts off with practice at 10:00 a.m. EDT and will be followed by the final qualifying session of the weekend at 1:45 p.m. Speed Channel will broadcast the qualifying period live starting at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
Paul Tracy - #26 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"It was a good run. I was able to put together two good laps and I'm happy with our time. This is our first street course with the KOOL Lola so we're learning. The car keeps getting better and better and we've only scratched the surface in terms of setup. It feels great to be in my hometown, I've gotten a lot of attention from the fans. I'm very happy with how the weekend is going so far, but I want to improve on it tomorrow. We've started with a basic setup and every change we've made has made it better. I'm happy being in the top three, but I definitely want to move up a bit and start on the pole."
Steve Challis, Race Engineer
"We're just getting better and better and I think there's even more in the car. This is our first street course with the Lola and I can see that we came here with a very good car. I really think we'll be better out there tomorrow. The track is changing and we want to make sure we change the car to go along with it. We have a direction and it's definitely one that's working."
Dario Franchitti - #27 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"I'm going to go see what Paul had! The car was not too bad but Paul has a little something that I don't and we're looking for it. On the first set of tires the KOOL car was pretty good, but I don't think that I got everything out of it that I could have. On the second set I struggled a bit. Finally when I thought that I could have gotten a good lap in, I was held up by traffic. It was a disappointing second half of the session, but I think we learned things in the first half that we'll be able to use when we go out there tomorrow and make a run for the pole."
Kyle Moyer, Team Manager:
"Things are all right, we're fifth and we'll take that. As the track picked up grip, our car started to go away. We're not that far off; and we're more than ninety-percent of the way there. We're chasing the back end of the car and using up the rear tires way to quick. We need to get that fixed, once we do I'm sure that everything else will sort itself out."
