Justin Wilson qualifies in second, Cristiano da Matta takes sixth place in first day of qualifying
TORONTO, Ontario, Canada, July 7, 2006 -- Justin Wilson (#9 CDW / RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth / Lola / Bridgestone) used a set of Bridgestone alternate red tires to capture second place in provisional qualifying for the Molson Grand Prix of Toronto, recording a best lap time of 58.830 seconds. His teammate, Cristiano da Matta (#10 RuSPORT Ford-Cosworth / Lola / Bridgestone), posted a best lap time of 59.343 seconds to qualify in sixth place for Sunday's race at Exhibition Place in Toronto.
"The CDW team did a great job to bounce back from this morning's engine fire," said Wilson. "After we went P1 in the first stint we decided to take the gamble on the alternate Bridgestone reds, but we just weren't quite fast enough. But it's a good start and hopefully we're in good shape for tomorrow."
"I think it was a productive day," said da Matta. "We found a couple of good things with the car. Now we just need to go through the data and put everything together for tomorrow. We definitely have room for improvement. The good news is we saved both sets of alternate red Bridgestone tires for tomorrow, so I think we should definitely look better tomorrow than we did today."
"I think was a good day for the team," said RuSPORT president Jeremy Dale. "Cristiano had a very solid run today, keeping in mind that a number of cars in front of him ran the quicker alternate red-sidewalled Bridgestone tires. But his lap time was a very solid, very quick lap time to put him into the sixth position. The team has some work to do on the car, but it's a great result for Cristiano and everyone on the car #10 team."
"Justin and his team did a great job today as well," continued Dale. "The provisional pole was within our grasp today, but we just mistimed it, in terms of car position on the track. Both A.J. Allmendinger and Justin used the red-sidewalled Bridgestone, and Justin had been the quickest car on the track using the black-sidewalled Bridgestone tires. So, we believe he had the car today to capture the provisional pole, but the traffic on the track hurt us. I'm sure the team will tune up the cars tonight, and tomorrow should be a good day. But all-around, it was an excellent Friday for the entire RuSPORT team."
Final qualifying is scheduled for Saturday, July 8, at 2:00 pm EDT. The 2006 Molson Grand Prix of Toronto will take place on Sunday, July 9. The race will be broadcast live on CBS, beginning at 12:30 pm EDT.
