Garcia Jr. Scores Points for Mercedes in Rookie Appearance at Toronto
Marking the mid-point in the 2000 CART FedEx Championship Series, Michael Andretti won a battle royale at Toronto's Exhibition Place, defeating Adrian Fernandez by 6.527 seconds to take his sixth career Molson Indy Toronto victory. Andretti took the lead following the second round of pit stops and persevered to the finish in a hard-fought race that claimed half of the field, including points leader Roberto Moreno.
Luiz Garcia Jr. scored championship points for the third time this season by finishing 12th in his first career appearance at the 1.755-mile temporary street circuit.
Drivers Mauricio Gugelmin, Bryan Herta, Michel Jourdain Jr. and 1997 race winner Mark Blundell retired with mechanical problems before the halfway point in the 112-lap contest. The series moves to Michigan International Speedway for the U.S. 500 on July 24. <pre> Results, Molson Indy Toronto Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 16, 2000
