</pre> The first day of the Grand Prix of Long Beach proved to be a frustrating for the cars of Team Rahal. The day was particularly tough on Max Papis in the Miller Lite car as the Italian driver fought a loose condition throughout the day, which caused severe handling problems. Tire changes and wing adjustments did little to correct the problem and Papis finished a disappointing 26th overall on the first day.
Kenny Brack in the Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola cracked the top-ten in the morning session with a fast lap of 70.079 seconds. Brack spent most of the afternoon session running among the top-five cars. With less than twenty minutes remaining in the session Brack stopped a wing adjustment and new tires. When Brack returned to the track an electronic glitch in wiring caused the engine to shutdown. Brack steered the car into the runoff and waited out the session.
Fortunately for both Papis and Brack their spots are secure in the fast qualifying session on Saturday based on their points paying finishes at Monterrey Mexico in the season's first race.
Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola - "It was a very tough day for me and the Miller Lite guys. We worked on a lot of different things today that we wanted to test. But we couldn't get the rear end of the car to grip off the corners. It was like it was a slippery track for us. I know we were trying many things for the engineers but I wanted to get in a good lap. I hit traffic several times and I spun once. It's a little weird because the car feels fast but it isn't going very fast. We're going to go back to a few things that worked in testing and at Mexico. I think we'll be better on Saturday."
Kenny Brack - Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola - "Our car was getting better with each time on the track today. We had an electronic problem late in the second session and we didn't run the last 15 minutes. We were second fastest in the afternoon with the first set of tires. We just put on the second set and the problem occurred. So I think we could have been in the top three with that last set of tires. But today is only a test day and we learned a lot. So I feel pretty good going into Saturday. Don't forget we are still learning more about this Lola chassis. Team Rahal has run Reynard chassis for the past five years. So everything is a little new for us with the Lola. I was actually surprised that we won the pole at Mexico because we haven't fully developed our road setup yet."
