Team Rahal Notes Toronto

The Knack Bobby Rahal makes no secret about his love for Toronto and the Molson Indy. No reason he shouldn't. The three-time CART FedEx Championship Series champion won the inaugural event back in 1986, has sat on the pole twice (1987 and 1992) and has been on the podium seven times in 12 visits there (including three of the last four). "I can't explain it," Rahal said. "I just have the knack for this place. I have a feel for it. It's just a place I always look forward to going."

Close, But Not Quite Despite stirring runs in Japan and Long Beach, Rahal's Last Ride has yet to produce a win for the retiring 24-time CART victor, though it could well come with a strong run this weekend. "Given our history in Toronto in particular, and Canada in general," he said, "it wouldn't be that surprising."

Secret Of My Success Team Rahal driver Bryan Herta has enjoyed a fair amount of success at the Molson Indy himself. Herta was victorious there twice in Indy Lights (1992 and 1993). What's the secret to success? "Get off the last corner well and carry speed through the first turn," Herta recommends. "You can pass on Lakeshore between (turns) two and three, but you'll need to be fast through (turn) one to get it done."

The Schneid In reference to his team's winless streak, Team Rahal co-owner and CBS LATE SHOW host David Letterman was asked during a recent media teleconference if he could do something to help the team get off 'the schneid.' Though he wouldn't offer a specific solution, he did offer his solemn pledge. "Any time I have the opportunity to help anybody - man, woman or child - to get off 'the schneid,' I'm there. I'm going the extra mile. There's certainly nothing worse than being on 'the schneid.'"

Dave's Kids Though Letterman will be unable to attend Sunday's Molson Indy, one hundred (100) area at-risk youngsters will. Letterman has purchased grandstand tickets, box lunches and Team Rahal T-shirts for the group, which includes kids from the Youth Assisting Youth, Big Sisters of Toronto and Toronto Children's Breakfast Club programs. The kids also will tour the paddock area and meet drivers Bobby Rahal and Bryan Herta before the race.

Local Lube Job As it has since becoming partners with Shell Oil Products Company in 1993, Team Rahal will use Canadian Formula Shell Motor Oil in both its Reynard/Ford-Cosworth Championship Cars during this weekend's Molson Indy Toronto as well as its sister event later this season in Vancouver.

Practice, Practice, Practice Though there is precious little time between events in the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship's current four-race run, Team Rahal's Lights outfit went back to the track this week for a test at the new Route 66 Raceway near Chicago in preparation for this weekend's Molson Indy. Team driver Mike Borkowski earned one of his five career top-ten finishes during his first and only Lights race in Toronto in 1995.
