#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard
Papis ran strong in the morning session posting the seventh fastest lap (39.745 sec/168.836 mph) in the Miller Lite car. In the afternoon session Papis battled problems with the car's brakes and logged just 16 laps. Still he managed to improve on his morning times with a lap of 39.557 sec/169.639 mph.
"Our Miller car didn't set well in the corners today," said Papis. "The rear end wanted to slide around and that made it difficult under braking. We tried a couple of different settings with the chassis and the car responded and was better. We still do not have the car where we want it. The tires felt good on stickers (new) and used (old) rubber. That could help us during the race, but right now I am more concerned about getting the car right for qualifying."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard
Brack lost precious track time in the morning practice with various mechanical problems with the car. Splitting the session between his primary and back-up car, Brack posted the fifth fastest lap (39.667 sec/169.168 mph) of the session despite running just a handful of laps.
Despite the limited track time the Shell team turned in an even better afternoon session. In 18-laps, all but one in his back-up car, Brack turned the second fastest lap of the day at 39.211sec/171.136 mph and trailing only Juan Montoya.
"I never have seen a track like Rio in all my years of racing," said Brack. "It is an oval but you drive it like a road circuit. It is an interesting track and one that will be fun to race on come Sunday. We had some trouble this morning and had to go to the back-up car. I am still learning the track so I think I will be more comfortable with the track on Saturday. The track doesn't look dusty but the cars actually suck the dust into the air here, so there is a lot of dust in the corners for braking. I think the track will continue to improve all weekend."
