LEXINGTON, OH . . . Team Rahal drivers Max Papis and Kenny Brack face a challenge on their home course of Mid-Ohio for Sunday's Miller Lite 200 (Noon EDT on ESPN). Brack, the CART FedEx Championship Series points leader qualified his car 13th on the starting grid with a fast lap of 122.249 mph while Papis collected the 19th spot with a fast lap of 121.436 mph.
Both drivers have their work cut out for them tomorrow although both have shown the ability to rebound from qualifying troubles to post strong race results. Brack started 17th at Cleveland but rallied to lead the race en route to a sixth place finish. Papis started 25th at Chicago but drove a great race and would have scored points until a fuel pump failure cost him position on the final lap.
The Miller Lite 200 pole went to Team Penske driver and defending series champion Gil de Ferran (124.214 mph) who is joined on the front row by his teammate Helio Castroneves (123.394 mph).
Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "It is difficult out there in the first session with this track. It takes about 20 minutes before the rubber really comes in for some fast laps. I know the second group will go much faster because we have put down some grip for them. Going on a green track is very tough. It was slippery and we were finally going fast in the last few minutes. The conditions are much different for the two groups. But that's the way the rules are for everyone. I would really like to see everybody out on the track at the same time. We just have to be in the points to run with the faster group. That was my best lap of the weekend but we still have to improve the car. We will have to be smart in the race and play the proper strategy. This track is hard on the drivers and that could be to my advantage on Sunday. This is where my winter training really comes into play."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "We had a chance today and we failed on our setup in qualifying. We went down the wrong path for qualifying but I think we can have a good racecar. However, starting that far back on the grid makes it hard to get to the front quickly. I tried many things this weekend and I spun three different times. But it wasn't there in practice and qualifying for our Shell team. You can't think about the points when you are racing. You have to just race and go flat out. You can't slow down and try to pace yourself. That's the quickest way to get in trouble. So we'll think out our race strategy and be prepared. We are not giving up this weekend. We can still make a strong run."
