The goal for Max Papis and Kenny Brack on the first day of the Gold Coast 300 in Surfers Paradise, Australia was simply to improve their qualifying session for Saturday. Both of the Team Rahal cars were in the first group (slower) based on their qualifying positions from Houston.
In the morning practice session Papis paced the field with a fast lap of 94.079-sec./106.241 mph. Kenny Brack wasn't far behind Papis posting the fifth quickest time of the session with a lap of 95.480-sec./105.407 mph. When they took to the track for qualifying Papis and Brack quickly topped the speed chart. Both cars underwent minor ride height adjustments spring changes to improve grip and handling. They would finish the first group second and third.
Brack was hit with an eight-minute penalty when his Shell car ended up in the run-off in Turn 3. Although he was out of the way of traffic the red flag was shown and the session was checkered due to the limited time remaining. The eight-minute penalty will be served during qualifying on Saturday.
Following the second half of qualifying Brack and Papis sat 11th and 12th respectively on the grid, positions that pushed them both into the fast session for Saturday.
CART points leader Gil de Ferran captured the provisional pole followed by Juan Montoya and Jimmy Vasser.
#7 Max Papis - Miller Lite Ford Cosworth/Reynard
"The car felt like it lost some grip from the morning session. Every lap I had problems with wheel spin. I had a good lap going at the end but I lost it when I ran up on Mauricio Gugelmin. Usually traffic isn't a problem on this course because it is so much longer than the usually street course. The good news is we squeezed into the fast session."
#8 Kenny Brack - Shell Ford Cosworth/Reynard
"This is a very interesting track because it is different than most street courses. There are some very fast sections but it feels really bumpy in those areas. I had a good lap going late qualifying but I went too deep into Turn 3 and ended up in the runoff and I couldn't get the car in reverse so they red flagged me and the session was over. I think I could have gone quicker because the tires were just getting up to temp. At least we got into the fast session like we wanted."
