"First of all I want to thank my engineer, Andy Borme, who did a fantastic job this afternoon. We were on the down side this morning and he completely changed the set-up and took a chance. Then all of the sudden out of the blue the car was beautiful -- I had the pole on my warm-up lap, but unfortunately that doesn't count. I made a little mistake on my first lap and I thought 'OK, I've got one more to go.' I was a tenth of a second quicker on my second lap when all of the sudden my car slowed and I thought, 'Oh my god, this can't be happening, we're running out of fuel.' I'm happy because I wasn't expecting to be on the front row after this morning's practice -- now let's hope we make it through the first turn tomorrow."

"I'm quite happy with today's qualifying result. I really didn't have my sights set on the pole since we haven't been near it all weekend, but I was looking for improvement in the Marlboro car. We've been struggling to find the right set-up -- we're running very low downforce so the car slides a lot, and this morning we had snap oversteer. This afternoon we certainly took a step forward which hasn't been easy this weekend."

-- Gil de Ferran, Marlboro Team Penske, #1 2001 Marlboro Honda Reynard
-- Qualified 12th - 23.458 sec.
