TEAM KOOL GREEN CONTINUES TESTING INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Team KOOL Green conducted two days of testing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on June 30 and July 1, with drivers Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti logging nearly 550 total miles in their KOOL Reynard-Hondas. Tracy ran a total of 111 laps, clocking a best time of 1:05.55 seconds on Firestone test control tires, nearly .727 seconds faster than the one lap track record set by Bryan Herta in last year's qualifying. Franchitti was also competitive on Firestone control tires, lapping the 2.25-mile road course at 1:06.00 seconds. Both drivers left the test pleased with the performance of their cars. "With 17 cars all trying to test, track time was limited, but I left Mid-Ohio with a very positive feeling," said Tracy. "We did some aero work and found a good direction during our shock evaluation. We still need to reduce mid-to-exit understeer in some corners but the car feels pretty good. I think we could have run better if we had more time." Due to the large number of cars participating in the test, track time was strictly regulated to allow only five cars on the track at a time. "The test was a bit disjointed because of the track car limit, which made back-to-back evaluations very difficult," said Team KOOL Green chief engineer Don Halliday. "I think it was quite productive and judging by everyone's times, I think the race pace could be quite hectic." "We had a few hiccups, on Tuesday Paul got on the wet grass and did some minor damage to the front wing and skids, but that was repaired and he went back out. On Wednesday, Dario went a bit wide in Turn 1 and looped the car, staying on track but signaling that it was time for us to call it a day." "We worked on our race setup on Tuesday, did some compound and construction tire testing for Firestone Wednesday morning and spent Wednesday afternoon trying to get the car back to where we needed it under changing track conditions," said Franchitti, who ran a total of 125 laps. "We were reasonably quick and I'm pretty happy with the car's balance, but we still have some work to do. I was able to do some very consistent long runs and that was good." Meanwhile, approximately 300 miles west of Mansfield, Ohio, Team KOOL Green Indy Lights driver Naoki Hattori completed 372 miles in two days of testing at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, Illinois June 30 and July 1. Hattori and the Team KOOL Green crew focused on damper development and recorded a best lap of 1:01.65 seconds. "It was a good test in terms of damper development," said engineer Eddie Jones. "We improved the car by .06 seconds compared to our previous test in low downforce configuration. Our braking was not at peak performance so we feel an even quicker time would be possible. We think we should have a good car heading into Cleveland." Following the Mid-Ohio and Blackhawk Farms tests, Team KOOL Green's Champ Car and Indy Lights crew members returned to Indianapolis to prepare for the next three-race stretch beginning with the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland (July 12), Toronto Molson Indy (July 19) and the U.S. 500 (July 26).
