LEXINGTON, OHIO -- Defending pole-sitter Dario Franchitti of Team KOOL Green clocked the third-fastest lap and teammate Paul Tracy was 13th in today's provisional qualifying session on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Sunday's Miller Lite 200. Franchitti covered the 2.258-mile road course in a time of 1 minute, 5.971 seconds for an average speed of 123.218 mph. Tracy recorded a quick lap of 1:07.246 (120.882 mph).

Gil de Ferran took the provisional pole with a fast lap of 1:05.347 (124.394 mph), tying the track record set by Franchitti last year. De Ferran's teammate and fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves was second, only 15 one-thousandths of a second behind with a speed of 124.366 mph.

Franchitti earned a podium finish (third) and led the most race laps at Mid-Ohio in 1999. Tracy has four career second-place finishes on the demanding Mid-Ohio circuit and is seeking his second road-course win of the 2000 season, after taking the checkered flag at Long Beach, the second race on this year's schedule.

The second qualifying session will be run tomorrow from 1:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It will be preceded by a morning practice session, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The 83-lap race starts at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) on Sunday, and will be televised on a two-hour tape delay on ABC starting at 4:00 p.m. (EDT).

PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(17th with a lap-time of 1:07.246 seconds / 120.882 mph)

"We're having problems with the rear brakes locking up. I went out in qualifying with the same brake configuration I ran this morning, and on my first fast lap the rear's locked and I went into the gravel trap. We got an eight-minute penalty (for causing a red flag during qualifying) and from there we were just trying to put together a good lap time. We did what we could do with one set of tires and we didn't have any time to make changes to the KOOL car, so we're behind. All in all, it was a pretty frustrating day for us. But we'll work our way through it "

DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(3rd with a lap-time of 1:05.971 seconds / 160.503 mph)

"The car really isn't too bad. The Team KOOL Green engineers have done a pretty good job with it, but we have to look at some other areas for tomorrow. We had a problem consistently today that we haven't managed to get to the bottom of yet, and that has hurt our performance. We had to work really hard to get what we got today. I don't think I can get much more out of the car the way it was today, but I'm sure we'll make some improvements for tomorrow. I just hope it's enough. I've got to start winning some races if we expect to be a factor in the championship. This race is one we can do very well in, so we can't let the opportunity go by.
