Team Kool Green Looking To Turn Up The Heat In Mid-Ohio
With an oppressive heat wave covering much of the Midwest, Team KOOL Green heads to Mid-Ohio looking to generate a little heat of its own. TKG drivers Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy, third and eighth in the point standings, are both looking to score maximum points and put a little pressure on the other contenders for the 2001 CART FedEx Championship title.
(Started 14th / Finished 16th at Mid-Ohio in 2000; currently 8th in the standings with 52 points)
"A track like Mid-Ohio is always a challenge because it throws so many things at you. There are fast turns, slow turns and elevation changes that all come in to play when we're trying to find the right balance in the car. You have to make sacrifices in some of the slower turns because you need to be able to carry as much speed as possible through the fast corners. We earned points in the last three races and Team KOOL Green's focus for the rest of the year is to get as many points as possible in the remaining events to challenge for championship."
(Started 3rd / Finished 22nd at Mid-0hio in 2000; currently 3rd in the standings with 81 points)
"I love coming to Mid-Ohio. It is a tough track to race at but it suits my style of driving and I've always qualified well there. I haven't been able to get the finish I want but I'm sure it is just a matter of time before I visit the winner's circle. At Mid-Ohio you're constantly changing direction, the track is up and down and it is a tough place. We need to get our luck to change a little bit and earn as many points as we can to keep the pressure on Kenny (Brack, points leader) as Team KOOL Green makes a run for the title."
It's home for the weekend for TKG's Dan Collins, a tire specialist and transporter driver with Dario Franchitti's #27 Honda Reynard crew. Collins, who was raised in Columbus, says that the CART FedEx Champ Car race in Lexington is just the thing he needs for a quick mid-season pick-me up.
While near his hometown, Dan will visit his mother and his buddies at the Air National Guard. During his six years there, he was the crew chief on a KC-135R, an air refueling tanker, while his father was the boom operator. They refueled anything that could be filled in the air -- fighter jets, bombers & cargo planes.
Dario's Track: Mid-Ohio is one place where Dario always qualifies well. So well in fact, that he shares the track qualifying record of 124.395 mph (1:05.347) with Gil de Ferran. In his four races at Mid-Ohio, Dario has started from the pole twice ('98 & '99), fifth in his rookie season of 1997 and third last season.
