Gurney's Son Among Team Green Academy Finalists
CART Online (November 24) -- Alex Gurney, son of All American Racers team owner Dan Gurney, has been named as one of five finalists for the Team Green Academy Class of 1997.
The finalists were selected from a group of 25 drivers who participated in a series of three-day driving seminars conducted recently by the Team Green Academy at the Derek Daly Speed Centre at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gurney earned Rookie of the Year honors in this year's Skip Barber Midwestern Formula Dodge Series, finishing second in the series with 10 victories. All five finalists have been invited to a five-day advanced driving program at DDS next month, from which the outstanding talent will be selected to receive assistance from the Academy during the 1998 racing season.
Joining Gurney as finalists are Paul Edwards, Tim Enoch, Joey Hand and Chris Menninga.
"Paul, Tim, Alex, Joey and Chris are exceptionally talented drivers who we think are destined to make their mark in racing," said Kim Green, Team Green general manager. "The Team Green Academy's objective is to help them do just that."
Team Green Academy supported drivers Matt Sielsky and Jeff Shafer in the U.S. National Formula Ford 2000 Championship this season. Sielsky won four pole positions and finished second in the championship, while Shafer scored a win and a pole in his first year in the series.
