TEAM TARGET PLEASED WITH THREE-DAY FONTANA TEST

Fontana, Calif. -- Although Target/Chip Ganassi Racing has claimed the past three CART championships, the team is not resting on its laurels as it attempts to win an unprecedented fourth straight PPG Cup. Team Target's Jimmy Vasser, who won his team's first title in 1996, logged more than 800 miles at California Speedway's 2.029-mile oval in Fontana, Calif. June 8-11. Over the course of Vasser's three-day test, the team focused on Firestone's race tires, recent changes to the Honda engine and the Hanford Device to be used on super speedways in 1999. "We had perfect conditions to test, but unfortunately they can't guarantee this kind of weather when we return in October (the Marlboro 500 at California Speedway is scheduled for Oct. 31)," said team manager Mike Hull. "We had three very good days with no mechanical problems, so we were able to complete everything we came to test. Jimmy is driving well and is anxious to race this weekend." Vasser currently ranks 10th in the 1999 PPG Cup point standings with 33 points. "After our string of bad luck this year, it felt good to get back to a place where I've had success. I hope this I feel this good, and better, after the race in Portland." Vasser's rookie teammate Juan Montoya, who ranks first in the PPG Point standings heading into Portland, gets his first taste of super speedway racing with the team's July 1 test at Michigan International Speedway. Team Target races back into action Sunday with the Budweiser/G.I Joe's 200 at Portland International Raceway.
