First practice session for the Honda Indy 300.
Surfers Paradise, Australia, October 25, 2002 - Team Player's drivers Alex Tagliani and Patrick Carpentier completed their first practice session today in preparation for Sunday's Honda Indy 300 at Surfers Paradise in Australia.
Tagliani finished 14th with a lap time of 1 minute 34.870 seconds around the 4.498-kilometre (2.795-mile) temporary street course. He averaged 170.688 km/h. His teammate Carpentier was 17th with a lap time of 1 minute 35.259 seconds (169.991 km/h).
Fastest of the 18 drivers entered for Round 17 of the CART FedEx Series was Cristiano da Matta with a lap time of 1 minute 32.977 seconds (174.163 km/h). The Brazilian posted his quickest time on the last lap of the session, edging Mexican Adrian Fernandez (1:33,289) by 0.312 second. Third fastest was American Jimmy Vasser, followed by Canadian Paul Tracy, Mexican Michel Jourdain and Swede Kenny Bräck.
Drivers will return on track for the first qualifying session beginning at 2:15 p.m. local time Friday (12:15 a.m. Eastern Time Friday). A second report on today's activities will follow.
