SURFERS PARADISE, Queensland, Australia (Friday, Oct. 25, 2002) -- Tony Kanaan and the #10 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Lola are fifth on the provisional starting grid for Sunday's Honda Indy 300 after first-round qualifying today on the streets of Surfers Paradise.  Kanaan turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 32.267 seconds (109.053 mph) on his very last tour of the 2.795-mile temporary beachside circuit during this afternoon's qualifying session.  He was seventh-fastest in this morning's opening practice session.

Bruno Junqueira is the provisional polesitter after a lap of 1:31.515 (109.949 mph).  Paul Tracy was second-fastest on the day at 1:31.575 (109.877 mph), followed by Scott Dixon at 1:32.143 (109.200 mph) in third and Cristiano da Matta in fourth at 1:32.162 (109.127 mph).

Final qualifying is set for 1:50 p.m. local time Saturday (11:50 p.m. EDT Friday) with a live, 90-minute broadcast set for SPEED TV beginning at 11:30 p.m. EDT Friday.  Race time Sunday is 2 p.m. local time (midnight EDT Sunday morning) with SPEED set to carry all the action live beginning with an 11:30 p.m. EDT Saturday pre-race show.

TONY KANAAN QUOTES

"That was one of the more eventful qualifying sessions we've had in a while, wasn't it?  I definitely feel like we had a top-three car today, but we just couldn't get any momentum going with all the red flags.  I'd be good for one fast lap and then the red would come out.  But that's the way it goes.  It's the same for everybody.  We have a good handle of what works and what's not with our setup, so we'll just have to hope for a good chance to run tomorrow (in final qualifying).  The last change we made today didn't help us like we thought it would, so I really had to drive hard to get the last lap we got to put us in the top five.  Overall, we're pleased with what we've got.  Man, I love this place so much, I really want to do well here."
