CART Statement Regarding Michigan 500 Race Incident
(August 6, 1998) - After an investigation of the events that occurred involving the #40 car on lap 175 during the U.S. 500 on July 26, 1998, we have determined that the tragedy was the unfortunate result of an accidental racing incident. We find no basis to assess blame in respect to the contact made by the #40 car, or in the consequences that ensued following such contact. CART's review of the incident will continue in our on going effort to work with our race promoters to ensure a safe facility for all those involved in CART race events.
