Homestead (February 3, 1999) - Canada's Patrick Carpentier walked away from the opening day of the fourth annual Championship Auto Racing Teams' FedEx Championship Series Spring Training with the fastest time among the 28 drivers who lapped the one-and-a-half mile oval at Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex Wednesday.

Carpentier, in the Players Mercedes Reynard, turned a 25.375 seconds lap in the morning test session, the day's best speed at 213.092 miles per hour. He won poles a year ago at both Nazareth and Milwaukee.

Second-quickest was Target Honda Reynard driver Jimmy Vassser, who has been the fastest in each of the three previous Spring Training sessions here, at 25.396 seconds, 212.916 mph. His fast lap occurred in the afternoon session, when he walked away with the top time.

Jimmy Vasser was second fastest today.

Third-fast on the day was Miller Lite Ford Reynard driver Max Papis. The Italian, who was in the car formerly driven by owner Bobby Rahal. Papis, who along with Vasser finished third in the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona this past Sunday, turned a time of 25.469, 212.305 mph following the lunch break.

Fourth was Vasser teammate and Champ Car rookie Juan Montoya in the Target Honda Reynard. The Columbian driver turned a 25.545-second, 211.674 mph lap during the afternoon session. Rounding out the top five was Canadian Greg Moore, who recorded a 25.549, 211.640 lap in the team Players Mercedes Reynard to Carpentier's.

A total of 20 drivers were within a second of Wednesday's fastest time. The second, and final, day of on-track testing at Spring Training begins Thursday at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.
