MOTEGI, Japan -- Oriol Servia came back to Japan, hoping to put behind the bad experience of last season's visit, however his bad luck continued for at least one more day.

The only driver in the FedEx CART Championship Series from the Catalonia region of Spain, experienced mechanical problems during the initial practice session, which hindered his efforts the rest of the afternoon in this, the first day of practice at Twin Ring Motegi.

In that first session, Servia's #22 Sigma Autosport Lola-Ford/Cosworth trailed smoke and fluid in the rear and lost power on the front stretch. Servia was forced to use his backup Lola in the afternoon practice, and recorded a fast time of 27.173 seconds, for a top speed of 205.086 mph.

In addition to this being Servia's second appearance in Japan; it is the Chicago-based Sigma Autosport's first venture into Asia, and second race outside of the United States.

Qualifying for the Firestone Firehawk 500 begins on Friday, May 18 (in the U.S.A., Thursday, May 17, at 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time)

"It turned out to be a tough day for us, but that's why we have back up cars. All things considered, at least we got some track time and put some miles on the back up. Tomorrow's another day, so we'll get the set up and other things sorted out and hopefully continue to keep up with our recent qualifying success." -- Oriol Servia, Sigma Autosport Driver
