DeFerran Fastest In Morning Practice

Elkhart Lake, WI(August 14, 1998) -- Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Reynard Honda) recorded the fastest lap speed Friday during morning practice for Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America.

De Ferran lapped the 4.048-mile permanent road course - the longest in the FedEx Championship Series - at an average speed of 144.808 miles per hour (1 minute, 40.635 seconds). He will attempt to improve on that speed when provisional qualifying begins at 3:30 p.m. ET today.

Andre Ribeiro (Marlboro Penske Mercedes) was second fastest at 144.377 mph (1:40.365) followed by Scott Pruett (Visteon Reynard Ford) at 144.239 mph (1:41.032). Rounding out the top five were Michael Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford) at 143.882 mph (1:41.283) and Bryan Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) at 143.436 mph (1:41.598).

FedEx Championship Series points leader Alex Zanardi was 20th-fastest at 140.733 mph (1:43.549). He slid off course at Turn 14 and impacted the tire barrier heavily with 20 minutes remaining in the session. Zanardi was uninjured, but did not return for the remainder of the session.

ESPN will televise Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 200 live, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
