Garcia's Run Puts Him Solidly Into Sunday's Motorola 220

Notes

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. - Luiz Garcia Jr. made up for the disappointment of Friday's qualifying, by turning a lap of 1:43.405 (140.929 mph) and qualifying for his second race at Road America, the Motorola 220.

Garcia's speed, in his Hollywood-Embratel-Telegate-Reynard/Mercedes-Benz, was more than two seconds faster than his best lap set Friday. Garcia made improvements on his time with each session.

The races at Road America have had a history of fuel problems, and the Project Racing Group will work with Garcia and develop a strategy to prevent the team from becoming a footnote in Elkhart Lake history.

The Motorola 220 drops the green flag at 1 p.m. Central Time.

Quotes

"We had a pretty good run. On my last run, I was on my second set of tires and was ready for another lap when I got stuck behind another driver. Had that not happened, I think I could have had a few more tenths. We could have been ahead of (Shinji) Nakano and (Tarso) Marques."

On race strategy

"The plan is to get in front of at least three guys ahead of me and to maintain a quick pace for the race. Once we achieve that, we should be okay. As for the fuel issue, we'll all discuss that tonight and go over it tomorrow." - Luiz Garcia Jr., Driver
