Neither rain nor red flags can stop Junqueira from satisfying win
Bruno Junqueira has been close to victory on numerous occasions this season, but the Newman/Haas Racing driver saved his finest moment of the 2003 campaign for today. He led all 34 laps in the soggy conditions at Road America to collect the maximum points available this weekend and take over the championship lead in Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford.
Junqueira, in the Pacificare Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires, mastered the use of the Potenzas throughout the race - in the rain, in the wet and in drying conditions. He was never seriously challenged for the top spot and claimed his fourth career victory and second on this circuit. Afterward, the Brazilian was quick to credit the performance of the Potenza rain tires that received their first full race workout this year.
"The Bridgestone tires were incredible!" raved Junqueira. "They held very, very well, even when the track started to dry up. The tires were still holding up well and I kept going faster and faster every lap. I just love this track. I think I was born to race here. I love it, every single corner. I have to thank Mario (Andretti) for keeping this track on the calendar, to give me the opportunity to get my first race win this year."
Alex Tagliani of Rocketsports Racing placed third today and was one of the more aggressive drivers throughout. He, too, paid his respects to the Potenza rain tires. "The Bridgestone tires were very good," said Tagliani. "They lasted pretty long even though we had some dry spots (around the course). The only thing that slowed me down at the end was that I had a flat-spot on one tire. It went down to the cord but it still held on for me. Bridgestone was good today."
Quote from Joe Barbieri, Project Supervisor, Bridgestone Motorsport:
"Today we were able to run more miles on our rain tires than anywhere else this year. The Potenza rain tire came through with flying colors, as witnessed by the many compliments received from drivers and team members. As expected, the tires did a great job when conditions were wet and they were equally impressive as the track dried. Congratulations to Newman/Haas Racing for its dominant performance and to the Champ Car World Series staff for working so hard to make sure this event took place today. Thanks, too, to the loyal fans who persevered with us under these trying conditions."
