RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil -- Despite a lack of quality seat time in his new car, Brazilian driver Luiz Garcia Jr. put forth a solid effort in qualifying for the Rio 200 Saturday afternoon.

However, during the technical inspection, the 2000 Reynard was found to be underweight and Garcia's time of 41.053 seconds (163.457 mph) was disallowed. He will start the race in 25th position.

During the morning practice, Garcia ran both the 2000 and 1999 Hollywood-Embratel-Tang-Varig-Banco Sofisa-Reynard/Mercedes-Benz. He started with the newer model, but because of a clutch problem, switched to the 99 chassis.

Sunday's race starts at 1:30 p.m. Rio Time.

Quotes

"It's been a tough weekend, but we'll get something out of this. We haven't had the best of luck, but we still feel this car has a lot of potential. It 's a shame really because we have had a few setbacks and we haven't had much time to do a set up. I don't think I have done a lot of flying laps, but believe me when I say there are many good things that are yet to come. Hey, we are getting closer to the best times. We're not that far off." -- Luiz Garcia Jr. -- Driver
