HOUSTON - The Project Racing Group (P.R.G.) is peacock proud and for good reason.
PPG Industries, a long-time sponsor of the CART FedEx Championship Series, announced that Team P.R.G.'s No. 25 Hollywood-Embratel-Telegate-Reynard/Mercedes-Benz car of Luiz Garcia Jr. has won its annual color and design award for the 2000 season.
With it carries a $10,000 prize that PPG will present to Garcia, team owner Andreas Leberle, and members of the P.R.G. team at the annual CART banquet on Oct. 30. The team's car will also be on display at the awards banquet, to be held at the Century Plaza in Beverly Hills, Calif.
"A lot of people have been a part of this winning design, color scheme and layout for this year's car," said a happy Leberle. "There are a lot of people to thank and obviously our sponsors have had a lot of input for they have made this effort possible.
"We have to thank Hollywood, Embratel, Telegate, Banco Sofisa, Tang, Infineon Technologies, Varig and Hawaiian Tropic. They have helped our car to look very good. We also can not forget our guys on the Project Racing Team who have worked relentlessly this season to put the car together," continued Leberle.
Garcia was also pleased with the result.
"I've always thought we had the best-looking car out on the track," said Garcia. "What's nice is this has been voted on by the fans and who am I to disagree with them? I want to thank them and PPG for this honor."
Since 1998, PPG presents the award to a Champ Car team that best captures the theme of best use of design and color. The vote is determined by a team of fan judges at selected oval races.
It was the third consecutive year that sponsor Hollywood and Reynard/Mercerdes-Benz have won the PPG award. It is the first time that Team P.R.G.'s associate sponsors Embratel and Telegate-Banco Sofisa-Tang have been honored.
