Mechanical problems derail qualifying efforts of Team Rahal.
PORTLAND, OR . . . A promising qualifying session turned into a nightmare as mechanical gremlins plagued Team Rahal drivers Jimmy Vasser and Michel Jourdain at Portland International Raceway (PIR).
Vasser qualified 12th with a fast lap of 118.646 mph on the scenic 1.969 mile course. Vasser was fourth fastest after the initial qualifying runs but grip problems plagued the Shell car and left the Vasser middle of the pack after the first day.
Michel Jourdain, second in the championship after five races, turned just five laps in qualifying after suffering a series of mechanical setbacks on the primary Gigante car. Jourdain was forced to qualify his back-up car and collected the 14th slot with a fast lap of 118.170 mph.
Practice and qualifying will resume at PIR on Saturday. The GI Joe's 200 is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 PM EDT on CBS.

"The car was much better than this morning. We leaped up to fourth in the first round of tires in qualifying. But for some reason, the tire pressures didn't come up to where we wanted it. And the car didn't handle the same. I was pleased the way the Shell guys made the car better for the afternoon. We just ran into some unusual situations on the second set of tires. Plus we had several guys come out of the pits right in front of us when we were on our fast laps. That is very frustrating. I can't tell you what I said on the radio. But I wasn't happy. We did find a good direction with the car though. I'm more confident going into Saturday now."
Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9 Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires)
"We had some problems with the primary car in the qualifying and we had to jump into the backup. We started the day with two different setups and I actually liked the backup car a little better in the morning. We made some changes with the primary car before qualifying but we never got the chance to run hard because of the mechanical problems. It wasn't too hard for me to get in the other car because we ran both cars this morning. But sometimes it can tough when you have been in one car all weekend and then you jump into another one. I think we'll be better on Saturday since we'll have more time on the track in qualifying. Plus the track should be better for us on Saturday."
