After having launched the season with three urban racing tracks, the Champ Car championship arrived in Portland (Oregon) for the fourth race of the season, on a classical track. Improving his car session after session, Simon managed to be quicker than his team mate and scored the sixth position of the first qualifying session.
Being aware of the remaining potential in his car set-up, the lap in the second qualifying session, but the rain lashing down made useless all the drivers efforts. Finally sixth on the starting grid, Simon set the best time of the warm-up session.
Confident in his possibilities to finish in the top 5, the Frenchman started well but was quickly disturbed by Dan Clarke's ambitious action in the first braking zone. Managing to avoid the collision, Simon lost a couple of places in the first lap, but scores eventually the 8th position.
Simon Pagenaud :
"The start wasn't too bad. But I quickly noticed that Dan Clarke, on my right, pushed to hard and was too fast to enter the first curve, what turned to be true. To avoid the collision, I had no choice but shortcutting the chicane, taking pains not to touch the cones bordering the zone. I lost a couple of places but let's see the bright side of the race ! My car was really fast in the racing conditions and enabled me to catch up my competitors and set the second fastest lap.
The 8th place I scored is not the real image of our performance we had in Portland. The team and myself are progressing race after race. If we could be a little bit more lucky, it could lead us to the podium in Cleveland. But before this race, my place is in the F1 paddock, this weekend in Indianapolis."
