FORSYTHE TEAMMATES PAUL TRACY AND MARIO DOMINGUEZ UP FRONT AGAIN IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING
PORTLAND, Oregon -- Friday, June 17, 2005 - Forsythe Championship Racing teammates Paul Tracy (#3 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) and Mario Dominguez (#7 INDECK Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) are once again near the front in today's first round of Qualifying for Sunday's G.I. Joe's Presents the Champ Car Grand Prix of Portland, with Tracy third on the Provisional Grid and Dominguez just behind in sixth.
Tracy's best lap of 57.911 seconds at 122.091 MPH was set early in the session and left him just 3/10ths of a second off the Provisional Pole time of Justin Wilson despite encountering handling problems during his second stint later in the session. ""We were caught out a little bit when we went out for the second stint on the "reds" (soft alternate-compound Bridgestone Potenza tires)" commented Tracy. "The car was balanced during the first stint on the standard tire and we timed it just exactly right before we went out for our second stint. The track gets faster as rubber gets laid down and I had good space on the track, so I was ready to put up some good times but it seemed like we suddenly had quite a bit of understeer and I just couldn't put a lap together."
Dominguez was just plain unlucky as the team watched a line of rain on radar moving in from the south and decided to start the second stint early to avoid a potentially wet track. The strategy looked good as very light rain started to fall just as Dominguez began his fast laps and posted a quick time of 58.093 seconds at 121.708 MPH on his 13th lap with about 15 minutes left in the session, but just as he completed his mandatory 15-lap allocation the rain stopped and the sun came out, making the track faster for drivers who came out in the last minutes of the session.
"We were really unlucky" said Dominguez afterwards. "I was quick during my first stint but right when we went out for my second stint it started drizzling a little bit. Then as soon as we were done the track dried out for everyone else. Sometimes you're lucky in that situation and sometimes you're not. This time we didn't have luck on our side but the car is good so I think we'll do better tomorrow."
Final Qualifying for the G.I. Joe's Presents the Champ Car Grand Prix of Portland gets underway at 2pm PT (5pm ET, 21:00 UTC) and can be watched LIVE anywhere in the world over the Internet by signing up for Race Director at the Champ Car World Series website, www.champcarworldseries.com.
