MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR -19- Herdez Viva Mexico Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 6th - THIS EFFORT MARKS MICHEL'S SECOND BEST QUALIFYING EFFORT (FIRST WAS IN FONTANA IN 1997 WHEN HE QUALIFIED 5TH) "The car in the rain needs to be better. We had a big push during the session. We are not as quick as we would have liked to go but we are working on it. A good thing for us was the fact that we were able to get some dry laps in on the car so that should help us. The guys in the first session didn't have that opportunity. It's nice to be in the fast group for tomorrow."
LUIZ GARCIA, JR. -71- Tang Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 9th - "We did a lot of looking up at the sky today. It really challenged us in regards to setting up the car. Overall I think we had a pretty good day. We still have a lot to learn but I am beginning to feel a lot more comfortable with the car now, especially after the Mid-Ohio test last weekend. Last year here when I was racing Indy Lights I started sixth and finished third so I am hoping that I have saved some of that success for this weekend."
ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - Qualified 20th - "The weather conditions made it very difficult. The Tecate/Quaker State car felt really good towards the end of the qualifying run. I had some trouble with traffic though on my last two laps which would have been my quickest for sure. But it really didn't make that much of a difference though because the second group had a much drier track and they were going to run faster times. I am looking forward to tomorrow when hopefully I will get to run in dry conditions."
P.J. JONES -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 26th - "My car was not that great in the rain. Maybe we should have pushed harder to set a quick time but the way things ended up it would not have made much of a difference anyway because of the changing track conditions. Hopefully it will be dry tomorrow and we will be able to show what we are capable of."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 22nd - "This was a real disappointing run. We should have changed tires for our last run but we didn't and it cost us. But, given how the track dried out for the guys in the second group it didn't make much of a difference. Hopefully we won't have to battle the weather tomorrow."
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - No Time - "A puddle sucked me in. I thought I had control and the puddle got me. Things like that do wonders for suspension. If there is any bright side to it I guess I get to go home early. As the session began I was already behind because of a penalty assessed from Long Beach and then after my off track excursion there was not much time left. I hope tomorrow we have a perfect run."
MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 15th - "Today was work for your brain. To know that when the conditions on the track are the same from everyone you prove that you can run with everyone else. Also I have never run one lap of practice in this car here in Portland. Bryan did all of our testing here. Getting the setup for today's car was a big questions mark but I relied on my engineers and they gave me a good car.
BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 25th - "I had trouble seeing out of my visor. I had some bubbles develop when we ran in the rain. We changed them three times but they all had the same problem. It's difficult to race in the anyway. Unfortunately we didn't have the opportunity to test when we were here because it didn't rain. Actually, I think this is the first time we have run the car on the rain tires this year. I am looking forward to tomorrow when hopefully we can show the same kind of results we showed the last time we tested here."
