Cicero, Illinois, July 27, 2001 The 1-mile Chicago Speedway oval, with its long straights and tight, narrow turns, posed no problem for Team Player's drivers Patrick Carpentier and Alex Tagliani on Friday as they put their respective cars to the test in preparation for Round 12 of the FedEx CART Championship on Sunday. Both drivers improved their times as the day progressed, recording fast laps that placed them 10th (Carpentier) and 15th (Tagliani) following the combined morning and afternoon sessions.

The fastest lap of the testing session was registered by Brazil's Bruno Junqueira in a time of 23.714 seconds (251.391 mph), while Sweden's Kenny Brack clocked 23.731.

The atmosphere was decidedly upbeat as Team Player's returned to action following its best performance of the CART season last Sunday, with Carpentier winning the Michigan 500 for his first win in the series, and Tagliani taking sixth place and playing a key role in helping his teammate seal the race victory. Carpentier received the accolades of Team Player's members and his fellow CART drivers as he walked along pit row today.

"It's been a fun week, but it's over, and we've got to focus our attention on getting back to the winner's circle as soon as possible," said Carpentier. "Today's Test Day went very well, and we were able to slightly improve our times during the afternoon session. Team Player's still has to work on the car because it slides a bit coming out of the corners. It also had a tendency to lose some grip when we are directly behind another car. We need to improve in these areas if we want to cut at least a half-second off our lap times. But there were plenty of good signs today, and one of them was the fact tire wear was not affecting the performance of the car."

Carpentier's best lap of the day 24.062 seconds (153.952 mph) came early in the afternoon session and had him in third place on the leader board until the latter half of the session. When the session went green following a fairly lengthy yellow, only five minutes remained, and heavy traffic prevented Carpentier from improving his fast lap.

Tagliani's testing sessions were similar to those of his teammate. His quickest lap also came in the afternoon run, a time of 24.100 on his 31st lap, a clocking that moved him from 22nd to 6th at that stage of the session. He, too, was unable to get a clear run under green in the closing minutes.

"It was a satisfying day, overall, although we're still lacking aerodynamic downforce," remarked Tagliani. "Team Player's has improved the car a lot from the previous 1-mile short ovals, but we're working on correcting the understeer on the car. We'll use the Saturday morning session to fine-tune the car. We're working to qualify in the top 10 because on this short oval, it isn't going to be easy to pass during the race."
