2002 CART FedEx Series Champions Newman/Haas Racing in process of selecting teammate to Junqueira.
LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (December 19, 2002) --- Newman/Haas Racing is moving closer to naming a second driver to team with Brazilian Bruno Junqueira after a recent test at the 1.65-mile road course at Sebring International Raceway. The team won their fourth CART Championship this season with driver Cristiano da Matta and will attempt to repeat the feat in the CART 2003 Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford.
Four drivers amassed a collective total in excess of 1,000 miles behind the wheel of two 2002 Lilly Toyota-Lola-Bridgestone race cars during the three day test that began on Monday, December 16. 2002 FIA F3000 Champion Sebastien Bourdais (French, 23), 1997 F3000 Champion and former Formula One driver Ricardo Zonta (Brazilian, 26), and 2002 Toyota Atlantic Champion Jon Fogerty (American, 27), shared the bulk of the testing duties while 2002 FF2000 Champion Bryan Sellers (American, 20) earned the test by virtue of an agreement between Carl Haas Automobile Imports, Dynamic Suspensions and Newman/Haas Racing.
"We are very pleased with the performance of all four drivers as well as the fact that they were able to collectively log more than 1000 trouble free miles in the Toyota-Lolas," said Brian Lisles, general manager of Newman/Haas Racing. "It was imperative that we focus solely on the drivers over the three days and having the cooperation of Toyota enabled us to concentrate on the outcome of each run in a racing package that we had existing knowledge with. All of the drivers showed that they are worthy of consideration for a position at our team."
Newman/Haas Racing, owned by actor/race car driver Paul Newman and racing entrepreneur Carl A. Haas will begin their 21st season of CART competition in 2003 and is the most successful active competitor with 68 race wins and 70 pole positions.
