Newman on Site to Watch Bourdais Set Fastest Time in Sebring
SEBRING, Fla. (March 26, 2004) -McDonald's® Champ Car driver Sebastien Bourdais completed his first two-day test of the season at the 1.65-mile road course at Sebring International Raceway late yesterday and emerged at the top of the unofficial time charts with a lap time of 50.55. A total of seven Champ Car drivers were testing in preparing for the 2004 season-opening round of the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series race, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 18.
Under cloudy conditions Bourdais was able to complete 216 miles of testing in addition to the 219 from Wednesday. He was pleased with the results but was cautious in his optimism.
"The test was very good," said Bourdais who will remain in Sebring to watch Junqueira test today. "We were able to complete a lot of miles and found interesting and promising things with our setup that will hopefully apply to all of the tracks we race on. The track was really grippy because of the sports car race last weekend, which is not like most street courses. The test has been good but I want to double check our findings at another test."
Many Champ Car teams were in Sebring for the test but Bourdais was most pleased by the appearance of one spectator. "I was very surprised to see Paul (Newman) at the test. I found out around lunchtime that he was coming and it was great to see him. He was in Atlanta testing a Corvette and decided to fly a little farther South to join us. We were also able to go to dinner and catch up before he went back to Atlanta which was nice."
