Patrick Carpentier dominates the Morning Session

Nazareth, PA (April 25, 1998) -- Canadian Patrick Carpentier zipped to the top of the list Saturday morning in his Players/Indeck Reynard Mercedes in the final round of practice before qualifying for Sunday's Bosch Grand Prix Presented by Toyota at Nazareth Speedway.

Carpentier turned an 18.800-second, 181.149-mile per hour lap in his best effort of the young season and now sets his sights on the pole on the unique, high-speed oval. Carpentier's top qualifying effort thus far has been a ninth at the season opening race at Homestead, Fla.

Second-fastest Saturday morning was Mauricio Gugelmin in the Hollywood Reynard Mercedes. This weekend marks the first outing for the 1998 racing package for PacWest Racing. Gugelmin sped around the circuit at 180.908 mph, in 18.825 seconds.

Third-quick was defending Bosch Grand Prix champion Paul Tracy, in the KOOL Reynard Honda at 180.755mph (18.841 seconds). Defending FedEx Championship Series champion Alex Zanardi was fourth in Saturday's practice and his teammate, Jimmy Vasser, fifth.

Twenty-seven of the 28 drivers on hand for this weekend's fourth round in the race for the PPG Cup were within a second of Carpentier's time. Qualifying is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. ET under sunny skies with temperatures expected in the 60s. Sunday's 12:30 p.m. ET race will be broadcast in ESPN.
