(March 26, 1998) -- Jimmy Vasser posted the top speed Friday morning during the opening practice session for Saturday's Budweiser 500, Round 2 of the FedEx Championship Series, on the new oval at Twin Ring Motegi. Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) averaged 215.471 miles per hour on his fastest lap of the 1.549-mile oval, slightly better than his pace-setting lap speed of 215.180 mph during an open CART test at Motegi in November. A second practice is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. local time Thursday (12:30 a.m. ET Thursday). Qualifying for Saturday's 201-lap, 500-kilometer Budweiser 500 begins 10:30 a.m. local time Friday (8:30 p.m. ET Thursday). The Budweiser 500 begins 1 p.m. local time Saturday, and will be broadcast on a tape-delay basis by ABC-TV at 2 p.m. ET Saturday afternoon. A live webcast of the Budweiser 500, provided by MCI the Official Communications Company of CART, begins at 11 p.m. ET Friday on the official FedEx Championship Series internet website, "www.cart.com", as well as on the MCI Racing website "www.mciracing.com". Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Labatt Reynard Ford) was second-fastest Friday morning, at 215.172 mph. PPG Cup champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) was third-fastest, at 214.816 mph, followed by Christian Fittipaldi (Kmart Swift Ford) at 213.198 mph and Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) at 213.051 mph.
