Motegi, Japan, May 13, 2000, - Heavy rain has forced CART officials to postpone until Sunday the Firestone Firehawk 500, Round 4 of the CART FedEx Championship Series.
This is the second postponement of a CART event this season. Earlier the Bosch Grand Prix of Nazareth was postponed because of snow.
The green flag is scheduled to wave Sunday, May 14, at 11:30 a.m. local time for the 200-lap race. Since the United States is 13 hours behind Japan, the race will start at 10:30 p.m. (Eastern) May 13.
Although rain ruined the day, it turned out to be a benefit for driver Luiz Garcia Jr. and the Project Racing Group (P.R.G.) as a faulty clutch was repaired during the rain delay. The problem was discovered during the morning warm up for the race. The P.R.G. crew split the car and replaced the clutch in the No. 25 Hollywood-Embratel-Tang-Reynard/Mercedes-Benz.
During the rain delay, Garcia did more than sit around. He composed a list of things he likes to do to toil away a rain delay. Here are the five things he says he enjoys doing during a rain delay:
5. Read the latest magazines
3. Pose with fans for pictures or sign autographs
2. Surf the net in the press room for the latest Brazilian soccer scores (Garcia was happy the professional team Flamengo was victorious 3-0)
1. Tell jokes with Portuguese punch lines that only Brazilians can understand
“I just feel very sorry for the fans. They are so wonderful, nice, fun and very loyal to racing. It’s a shame they spent the whole day in the rain waiting for us to go out and run. Hopefully Sunday will be nice and sunny and then we can put on a great show for them.” – Luiz Garcia Jr., Driver
“The rain saved us as we had a clutch problem. The crew replaced the clutch and Luiz will be ready for the race.” – Andreas Leberle, Team Owner
“Obviously a rain delay is always disappointing for everyone, especially the fans,” said Gugelmin. “I just hope we can get a start tomorrow and put on a show that the fans can enjoy.”
The race will still be shown at 1pm(ET) on Sunday on ABC with a replay on ESPN on Wednesday from 2pm (ET).
lCanadian racing fans will have to tune to The Sports Network to see if the race will be telecast live at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday
