Honda-powered drivers Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves led opening-day practice action today at the Twin Ring Motegi oval in preparation for this weekend's Firestone Firehawk 500. With nearly perfect weather conditions, Kanaan's best time of 26.142 seconds around the 1.5 mile oval already bettered last year's pole qualifying run by Juan Montoya.

Just five-hundredths of a second slower, Long Beach race winner Castroneves was another of the five Honda-powered drivers in the top ten positions today, with the others including team owner/driver Adrian Fernandez, two-time former champion Alex Zanardi and defending series title-holder Gil de Ferran. All nine Honda drivers ended up in the top 15 today, and within a half second of Kanaan's time.

Tony Kanaan (#55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda) fastest in practice today: "I had a good handling car here last year, so we started off today well and didn't have to make any major changes. Honda has done a really good job on the engine this weekend. We definitely have good power now, but drivers are always greedy and of course I want more for tomorrow! The other big change for us this year is moving to a two-car team. The team has grown so much since Alex (Zanardi) has joined us. We share all our information, there are no secrets between us. He's definitely a big plus for the team, a great teammate and a good friend."
