Franchitti to start second in Montreal.
Montreal, Quebec - After two days of struggling with set up on the 2.707-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, things came together in dramatic fashion for Team KOOL Green driver Dario Franchitti Saturday, when the Scot posted the second fastest time of the day during final qualifying for the Molson Indy Montreal. Franchitti, whose performance earned him his third front row start of the season, posted a fast lap of 1:19.928 seconds (122.928 mph) and will line up next to Cristiano da Matta for tomorrow's 80-lap race. Franchitti's teammate, Paul Tracy, who was second quickest in the morning practice session, will start tenth. Team KOOL Green technical partner Michael Andretti will start eighteenth.
Da Matta earned his second championship point of the weekend and scored his sixth pole position of the season after posting the day's quickest lap of 1:18.959 seconds (123.512 mph). Bruno Junqueira was third fastest with a best lap of 1:19.347 seconds (122.908 mph).
While the qualifying period was smooth running for Franchitti, brake troubles plagued Tracy during the one-hour session ending the Canadian driver's hopes of earning his first pole of the 2002 race season. The last time the veteran racer started lower than tenth was at Cleveland in mid-July. Tracy drove to a third place finish after starting the race in eleventh position.
Tomorrow's CART FedEx Champ Car schedule starts off with warm up at 10:00 a.m. EDT and will be followed by the race at 2:00 p.m. EDT. Speed Channel will broadcast the race live starting at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
Dario Franchitti - #27 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"This morning the KOOL car was reasonable on old tires, we just weren't sure if we were going to be able to translate that onto new tires. Obviously it worked for us. There were about three laps out there where I really felt like I had things going, but I was a bit greedy on the curbs and the chicanes and I just messed things up. It was nice to get one in the bank. We're still going to work on our straight-line speed, but when I was out there I grit my teeth on the straights and tried to get a good lap in. It's really good to be starting on the front row. I'm happy for Team KOOL Green."
Kyle Moyer - Team KOOL Green Team Manager
"After the past couple of races we've had it's good to be back where we should be. Not being on the front row for a while has been such a disappointment for the whole team. We're really happy with Dario's performance, it's a true testament to the caliber of driver he is. We're looking forward to giving (Cristiano) da Matta a run for his money in the race tomorrow."
Paul Tracy - #26 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"The day started so well, but then it all fell apart. We've been having braking problems all day and it's been frustrating. I was hoping to qualify third or fourth and this is disappointing for me especially after the morning session. I just want to finish tomorrow's race. We've had a few things happen in the last few races, either we've had mechanical problems or people have taken us out. I just want to get to the finish line. If I can get there, I know that I'll have a good result."
John Anderson - Team KOOL Green Consultant
"This morning was so positive and now we're not feeling very good at all. The only reason that (Cristiano) da Matta was anywhere near close to Paul this morning was because Paul towed him around. We should have been repeating that performance this afternoon. We made a couple of changes before the session, and then we went in a bit of a different direction when the red flag came out during qualifying. Now we're locking the rear brakes. We're going to take a look at what we're dealing with and do everything we can to make things better."
