NELSON PHILIPPE DISAPPOINTED WITH 10th PLACE WHILE ROOKIE DRIVER DAN CLARKE SEES 8th POSITION AS STEPPING STONE FOR BETTER THINGS TO COME TOMORROW.
The second day of qualifying on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve took place under crystal blue skies and a nice ambient temperature of 61F/16C.
The morning started quickly for driver Nelson Philippe who posted the second fastest time with a lap of 1:21:443 (119.745) early in the practice session. He finished the morning tied him for 5th place with Oriol Servia with a time of 1:21:443 (119.745 mph). It looked like it was going to be a strong qualifying session but it did not deliver the results that were expected and Philippe had to settle for a fastest lap of 1:21:725 which earned him the 10th spot on the grid.
For his part, Rookie Dan Clarke was able to better his morning time with a lap time of 1:21:555 and will be starting form 8th place. This is very encouraging for tomorrow's race since he has been faster from one session to the next. This being Clarke's first outing on the 2.709 mile road course, he is getting more familiar with the track with every lap and feels confident he can have a great race on Sunday.
NELSON PHILIPPE, #4 CTE Racing HVM/ Lola/Ford-Cosworth (10th)
"I am disappointed about the results today. We thought that the changes we did were going to be successful but I just could not go any faster. We will be going over the data tonight and we'll be strong tomorrow, no matter what."
DAN CLARKE, #14 CTE Racing HVM/ Lola/Ford-Cosworth (8th)
"You always want to be higher up the grid for the start, so I could be disappointed with eighth, but I finished third from a ninth place start two weeks ago, so it's not such as big deal. My second set of tires didn't feel as good as the first, so although I didn't get a chance to use all my laps, I'm satisfied with our time. Although we're so close to Will (Power), just another lap could have put me ahead of him. The rookie battle is so tight and I think our times today showed how close we are. There's everything to play for tomorrow, I'm going to go out, keep my head down, let the race unfold and enjoy this great track."
KEITH WIGGINS, CTE Racing HVM Team owner
"Obviously, we are a little disappointed. We thought we would have been closer to the top after the way we had been running in the practice session this morning. Dan did a respectable job for his first time here. We expected to be higher up on the grid with Nelson but we know we are usually stronger in the race, so we are not worried."
