Rookie Hunter-Reay Fifth in Provisional Qualifiying

Ryan Hunter-Reay, driver of the #1 us print/Medlock Aimes Winery/Toyota/Swift made his Atlantic qualifying debut this afternoon in the provisional qualifying for round one of the 2002 CART Toyota Atlantic Series at Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico. Setting the fifth fastest time of the session, Hunter-Reay missed the top-three by just .02 sec., finishing behind fellow rookies and Indy Lights veterans Luis Diaz and Derek Higgins, both whom raced here last year. Hunter-Reay has been consistently fast throughout the weekend, he set the third fastest time in yesterday's test session and was fourth quick this morning in practice. Hunter-Reay joined the defending Atlantic champs, Hylton Motorsports in January from the CART Barber Dodge Pro Series, where he earned the Rookie of the Year title in 2000 and finished fifth in the 2001 championship.

Hunter-Reay on the Practice:

"Well, we are very happy to be in the top three this morning. The track felt much better today and it will probably be a bit different again this afternoon. This is a very good result because we have been experimenting a lot with the car. Every time I came in, we made fairly drastic changes to the car, yet we remained third, so I think we have a pretty good idea of the direction we need to go for qualifying."

Hunter-Reay on Qualifying:

"This is not the result we had hoped for, I think the track changed a bit more than we had expected. We missed it on the timing when I came for my final run. First, I had two cars spin right in front of me, and then I was held up in traffic, so that was unfortunate. However, I made a couple of mistakes as well and we are going to go through the data and see where we can improve. We will make a couple of changes tonite and hopefully get back into the top three for tomorrow."
