Team Motorola Qualifying Report March 9, 2002
Michael Andretti - #39 Honda-Reynard-Bridgestone
"Our strategy almost worked today, we almost got the point for fastest Saturday qualifier but then Fernandez (Adrian), who had nothing to lose, went out and pipped us before it started to rain hard. After we went out, Adrian knew what time he had to beat and was able to use the laps he needed to get the point and they did the right thing. Tomorrow is going to be difficult. We don't have the best starting position and the track will probably be pretty slippery since the rain will wash off most of the rubber that was down. Obviously, starting 17th isn't going to be the best starting position but hopefully Kim (Green), Tony (Cotman) and Eddie (Jones) will come up with a strategy that will take advantage of the new race rules and get us to the front. It is definitely going to be an interesting race."
Sunday will be Michael's 291st start of his career.
Michael leads all active Champ Car drivers with 290 race starts, 41 wins, 32 poles and 6,517 laps led.
Kim Green -- General Manager
"We thought we would try and go out there and get the point today for fastest qualifier and it almost paid off, but the local hero, Adrian Fernandez, snuck out there and beat us just before the rain started to come down. It was worth a gamble and worth a try, but a little frustrating because it would have been nice to qualify today in the dry and improve on yesterday's effort. We know that Michael can race from anywhere on the grid and be competitive so that's what we're looking forward to for tomorrow's race. We're going to spend this evening looking at our tactics and based on our starting position we may vary our pit strategy for tomorrow's race."
