Carpentier In Line to Win $330,000
Milwaukee, WIy -- When Patrick Carpentier won the pole for today's Miller Lite 200, he firmly placed himself and the Player's Forsythe Racing team in position to take home a big bundle of cash if he can win Round 7 of the FedEx Championship Series.
Carpentier won the $20,000 Marlboro Pole Award for taking the top spot Saturday (carryover from St. Louis doubled the payout after there was no official qualifying session last weekend) and now stands to win an additional $210,000 of Marlboro money if he can get to the checkered flag first in today's Champ Car race. The winner's share of the Miller Lite 200 purse is $100,000.
The last time a CART driver won from the pole was at Cleveland last year when Alex Zanardi came from nearly a lap down, after a couple of pit penalties, to claim the victory.
In Sunday's warm-up session, Carpentier was eighth-fastest during the half-hour session. His teammate, Greg Moore, who will start next to him on the front row, was quickest, turning a 21.015-second lap, 176.788 mph. Second-quickest was Jimmy Vasser at 21.015 seconds, 176.034 mph in the Target Reynard Honda. Third fastest was Robby Gordon in the Panasonic Duskin Reynard Toyota at 21.113, 175.967 miles per hour.
Fourth was Michael Andretti at 21.330, 174.177 mph in the Kmart Texaco/Havoline while Michel Jourdain Jr. was fifth at 21.373, 173.827 mph.
Mauricio Gugelmin, Alex Zanardi, Carpentier, Al Unser Jr. and Adrian Fernandez rounded out the top 10.
Today's race is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. central time start and airs live on ESPN in the United States. The broadcast will also be seen in more than 180 countries around the world by an audience of over 60 million people.
